Zagori Bridges & Gorges

About This Trip

The first sound is the crunch of tires on gravel as the asphalt narrows and the mountains close in. Stone houses appear one by one, slate roofs stacked like dark scales against the green. A cold breath slides down from the Vikos Gorge, carrying woodsmoke, wet earth, the faint clang of a goat bell somewhere up the slope. You pull over almost without thinking; just ahead, a narrow arch of stone leaps across a clear, fast river. This is how Zagori introduces itself: through its bridges. The road winds between villages that seem carved from the very hillside — Kipi, Dilofo, Monodendri — each a cluster of alleys, low doorways, and worn steps polished by generations of boots and hooves. You pause at Plakidas Bridge, that improbable triple-arched curve of stone, and realize how much of this region is about moving carefully through steep country: paths, cobbled kalderimi, zigzags that lead to viewpoints and chapels clinging to the rock. Mornings start crisply. Light spills over the ridge, revealing the cut of Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest canyons in Europe. From Oxya or the quieter Beloi balcony, the gorge drops away in layers of limestone and forest, the Voidomatis River a thin line of blue far below. The air feels stripped clean. Conversations shrink to whispers without anyone deciding they should. By midday, the mood softens. You reach Ovires Rogovou, where the stream has carved smooth basins into pale rock. Shoes off, feet in. The water is shockingly cold, a jolt that makes you laugh out loud. Stone walls hold the warmth of the sun, and for a while there is nothing to do except watch the water move from pool to pool. Afternoons settle into a pattern of drives and detours: climbing toward Papigo with its tight switchbacks, pausing for coffee in a village square, following a signed path just to see where it goes. Long lunches anchor the day — tables under broad plane trees, enamel jugs of local wine, plates of goat slow-cooked with herbs, pies layered with wild greens and feta. Meals stretch, as they should, until the shadows lengthen. The road finally spills you out at Ioannina, circling the lake under the old castle walls. Twilight gathers slowly here. Locals stroll the promenade, fishermen coil their lines, and lights flicker on in lakeside cafés. You lean on the stone rampart, watching the last color drain from the water, and feel the quiet weight of the mountains behind you — a landscape of bridges and gorges that now feels, in some small, steady way, familiar.

Arrive in Ioannina and head straight into the old town, where stone lanes and low archways feel like a gentle decompression from the drive or flight. After a long lunch of modern meze, you wander through Ioannina Castle, slipping between mosques, museums, and quiet courtyards on the peninsula. A short stroll brings you to Lake Pamvotida’s edge, where cafés face the water and fishermen work from small boats. Dinner is nearby, followed by an unhurried twilight walk as the mountains darken behind the lake.

Epirus Road Trip

You leave Ioannina behind and climb into Zagori, the road tightening as slate-roofed villages appear along the slopes. Kipi becomes your base, a compact stone hamlet surrounded by old paths and river crossings. Late morning is for the elegant triple curve of Plakidas Bridge, where the stone seems to float above clear water. After a long taverna lunch, you follow another short drive to Kokkorou Bridge, wedged dramatically between cliffs. Evening settles back in Kipi over a hearty village dinner and local wine.

Zagori

Today is all about seeing the depth of Vikos Gorge from above. You drive from Kipi to Monodendri, trading river sounds for the quiet of a clifftop village. From there, a short road and path reach the Oxya balcony, where the gorge drops away in sheer layers under your feet. After a taverna lunch back in Monodendri, you continue toward the more remote Beloi viewpoint, with a different angle on the canyon. Evening brings a slow descent back to Kipi and another simple village meal.
