Volcanoes and Vineyards East

About This Trip

A fishmonger’s shout cuts through the morning in Catania, rising above the hiss of frying oil and the clink of espresso cups. At La Pescheria market, silver anchovies spill over mounds of crushed ice, swordfish heads stare glassy-eyed from scarred wooden blocks, and the smell of sea salt mixes with grilled peppers and lemon. You thread between stalls with a paper cone of panelle or a warm arancino in hand, watching vendors gesture with knives and scale fish in a steady, practiced rhythm. This is how your ten days in eastern Sicily begin: vivid, noisy, and close to the ground. From here, the road swings inland toward the dark slopes of Etna. As the coast recedes in the rearview mirror, citrus groves give way to black volcanic stone walls and neat rows of vines rooted in ash-rich soil. Near Linguaglossa, you step into a vineyard where the ground crunches underfoot like cooled embers. Glasses of Etna DOC wines line up on a barrel: pale, mineral whites that smell faintly of herbs; reds with a smoky edge that speaks of the mountain just above. Lunch stretches long, punctuated by caponata, grilled vegetables, and conversations that drift between vintages and eruptions. Days slow along the coast. In Taormina, you climb through stone alleys to the Greek theatre as the sun sinks behind Etna. The curve of the stage frames the cone of the volcano and the sweep of the Ionian Sea below — an ancient vantage point for one of Sicily’s most striking views. The next afternoon, you’re on a small boat circling Isola Bella, water turning from deep cobalt to clear turquoise over pebbled coves. You swim, dry off in the breeze, then return to town for an evening passeggiata beneath balconies draped with bougainvillea. Farther south, Syracuse draws you onto Ortigia, its limestone facades turning honey-gold in the late light. You wander through narrow lanes where laundry hangs above Baroque doorways, then step into a small piazza where the sea presses in from every side. One day you drift by car through Noto’s theatrical streets and onwards to Marzamemi, a low-slung former fishing village where restaurants spill out along the old tonnara and dinner is a plate of tuna crudo, citrus, and olive oil that tastes of the shoreline. On your final night, you linger on Ortigia’s seafront wall, the stone still warm under your palms. Waves slap gently against the rocks below, conversations soften around you, and Etna’s outline is just a shadow on the northern horizon. Nothing dramatic happens; the island simply settles into evening, and you feel quietly, firmly anchored to this corner of Sicily.

Today is for settling into Taormina itself. A slow morning coffee and granita ease you into the town’s rhythm before you explore its narrow side streets, churches, and viewpoints. Midday is flexible for shopping, a light lunch, and perhaps a siesta. In the late afternoon you climb toward the ancient theatre, timing your visit so the light softens over Etna and the Ionian Sea. After soaking in one of Sicily’s most iconic views, you return to town for an unhurried dinner and an evening stroll.
