About This Trip

Stone underfoot is still warm from the day as you cross Piazza Bra, the curve of Verona’s Roman Arena glowing rose in the early evening. Street musicians tune their instruments, café glasses chime, and the air smells of espresso giving way to Valpolicella reds. You drift through narrow lanes toward the Adige River, climbing slowly to Castel San Pietro as the city lights flicker on below. From the terrace, Verona spreads out in soft gold: bridges, bell towers, terracotta roofs. The trip begins not with hurry, but with a long, unhurried gaze. Mornings soon settle into an easy rhythm of packing the car, rolling down the windows, and leaving the city streets for the first glint of water at Lake Garda. Bardolino’s promenade feels almost like a living room by the shore: families on bicycles, couples sharing gelato, locals talking with hands and laughter. A ferry nudges away from the pier toward Sirmione as the sun drops, and you ride across the lake with the castle towers slowly sharpening ahead, the wake fanning out behind in silver and peach. The road north tightens around the lake, olive groves giving way to rock, then to high, green slopes. In Malcesine, a cable car swings you up to Monte Baldo, where the world widens. Paths follow easy ridgelines, hawks circle, and Lake Garda lies far below like a spill of glass. A few days later, the curves of the Dolomite passes take over: Sella, Pordoi, hairpins stacked like switchbacks in a dream of limestone. At the top, a rifugio door opens with a rush of warm air, polenta and speck on the menu, boots lined up by the entrance. On Alpe di Siusi, the drama softens again—wide meadows, wooden barns, trails that invite more wandering than effort. The last arc of the journey carries you back toward the vineyards of Valpolicella. Stone hamlets cling to hillsides; rows of vines catch the last light. In a small winery courtyard, glasses of Amarone catch it too, dense and slow in the glass. Children chase each other between barrels, conversation drops to a murmur, and the sky fades from apricot to blue. You sit back, not needing to say much, the route you’ve followed held quietly in the view.

With jet lag gone, this day is for sinking into Verona’s rhythm. Meander through medieval lanes, browsing small shops around Piazza delle Erbe and pausing at shaded cafés. Cross stone bridges to feel the city curve around the Adige, with plenty of gelato stops for the kids. Take it slowly rather than ticking sights, letting conversations and corners lead you. In the evening, return toward the Arena area for a relaxed dinner and one more stroll under the lit arches.
