Val Gardena Easy Peaks

About This Trip

Cowbells ring softly across the valley as the first lift hums to life above Ortisei. Cool morning air smells of damp grass and bakery sugar; someone is pulling apple strudel from the oven on the main street. You step onto the cable car almost without effort, watching the village slip away and the pale Dolomite walls rise ahead, sharp and unreal against the sky. By the time you reach the Seceda ridge, you’ve hardly broken a sweat. Yet the view looks like it belongs to mountaineers: vast cliffs dropping toward Val Gardena, sawtooth peaks marching to the horizon, tiny farms clinging to impossible slopes. A short, easy stroll along the ridge path is enough to feel the scale of it all—wooden crosses, grazing sheep, the distant clink of cutlery from a mountain hut where lunch might be speck, dumplings, and a beer in the sun. This week moves at that same unhurried pace. One morning it’s Alpe di Siusi, the high plateau spreading out in every direction, more meadow than mountain. The walking is gentle here, looping along farm tracks between weathered barns and flowered fields. Families push strollers; cyclists glide by. You pause at a hut terrace for a plate of canederli and a view that reaches across half of South Tyrol. Another day, the road itself becomes the adventure. The car winds up toward Gardena Pass, then Sella, hairpins stacking above each other. Motorbikes purr past; cyclists grind slowly uphill. At each pass, you step out into crisp air and a ring of peaks, watching clouds slide over rock faces that seem almost carved. Evenings pull you back to the calm of your hotel in Val Gardena. Maybe there’s a pool, maybe just a balcony and a glass of local wine. The village settles into a quiet rhythm: Ladin voices on the street, church bells, the smell of grilled sausage from a small restaurant where you end the day over polenta and venison. On your final night, a funicular carries you up to the Resciesa plateau for sunset. The light fades over the Odle group, turning the stone from silver to a deep, muted rose. Down in Val di Funes, the tiny Santa Maddalena church stands in its meadow, steady and unchanged. You watch until the last ridge loses its color, then turn back toward the valley lights, legs still fresh, mind pleasantly full.
