Two Lakes in Style

About This Trip

The hull kisses the stone quay with a soft thud, and bells from a lakeside church drift across the water. In Bellagio, early light slides over slate roofs and clipped cypress, catching the wake of passing ferries as they fan out toward Varenna and Menaggio. The air smells of espresso and wet stone. Tables are being laid under striped awnings; someone is hosing down the promenade. The day is just starting to gather pace. Mornings here lend themselves to slow crossings. A ferry ride becomes a moving balcony, gliding past ochre villas, terraced olive groves, and steep, wooded slopes that rise directly from the water. Step off in Varenna and climb cobbled alleys to a tiny piazza; in Menaggio, follow the flat lakeside path where families stroll and locals chat on benches. Nothing is rushed. The lake sets the rhythm. One day folds into the next with a gentle pattern: a late breakfast, then a walk through Villa Carlotta’s terraced gardens where camellias, rhododendrons, and citrus trees tumble down toward Lake Como. Marble statues watch over lawns and gravel paths; from the upper terraces, the three-pointed meeting of Bellagio, Varenna, and Menaggio lies below like a living map. Afternoons invite a swim, a glass of local white wine, perhaps a gelato carried along the shore. As the sun drops, the mood shifts. A private boat ride from Bellagio slides you over darkening water toward Villa del Balbianello. The captain eases close to its loggias and clipped hedges clinging to a wooded promontory, the villa turning gold in the last light. The engine cuts for a moment, leaving only the slap of small waves and the distant hum of another boat heading home. The road to Lake Maggiore unwinds through valleys and stone-built villages until the water opens again at Stresa. Here the Borromean Islands sit just offshore. Isola Bella, with its Baroque palace and stacked, theatrical gardens, feels purpose-built to be approached by boat. You wander from mirrored halls out to terraces where white peacocks pick their way around carved balustrades and the lake stretches out, framed by peaks. Another day, you climb to the Rocca di Angera, a fortress gripping its rocky spur above the southern basin. From the ramparts, ferries thread their way between harbors, and the curve of Lake Maggiore reveals itself in full. Later, in Orta San Giulio, the scale shrinks again: narrow lanes, peeling frescoes, laundry strung between balconies, and the island basilica floating just offshore like a quiet thought. Evenings settle softly in Stresa. The promenade fills with gentle foot traffic—couples, families, cyclists coasting to a stop. Restaurant terraces glow; plates of lake fish, risotto, and shared carafes of Piedmont wine appear without ceremony. Across the water, the silhouettes of the islands darken until only a scatter of lights remains. On your last night, you pause at the railing, feeling the boards of the pier underfoot and the faint cool rising from the lake. A ferry glides past, its interior lit like a moving room, then slides into the distance. The water smooths over once more, and the quiet is enough.

Soft Landing

You land at Malpensa and drive into central Milan as the city eases into the day. After dropping bags, the marble spires of the Duomo and the wide, buzzing piazza give a first hit of Italian energy. A long lunch and a gentle wander through nearby streets sets an unhurried tone. As the light softens, you move toward the Brera district, where narrow lanes, boutiques, and warm-lit trattorie create a cozy, urban counterpoint to the lakes that await.

Lake Como

Today you ease from city to lake. A final, slow Milan morning leaves time for a neighborhood coffee and one more look at the Duomo’s spires before your driver heads north. The road winds past Como and into narrower, greener valleys until Lake Como suddenly appears below. Bellagio’s pastel houses and cypress-lined promontory come into view as you arrive. After settling in, a lakeside stroll along Lungo Lario Manzoni and a casual dinner introduce the gentler rhythm that will define the days ahead.

Slow Travel

This is your first full lake day, built around ferries and waterfront promenades. A late breakfast leads into a short walk to the pier, where car ferries shuttle steadily across the water. You glide to Varenna for cobbled lanes and a coffee with a view, then cross again to Menaggio to follow its flat lakeside path, watching families stroll and boats come and go. Back in Bellagio by late afternoon, there’s time for gelato and an early-evening passeggiata before dinner.
