Provence Lavender Towns

About This Trip

A low hum rises from the fields before the sun does. Bees move through the lavender on the Valensole plateau, the air already warm and carrying that sharp, clean scent that clings to your clothes and skin. As the first light slides across the endless rows, the purples shift from inky blue to silvered mauve. A farmer’s truck rattles along the track, and for a moment it’s just you, the whirr of insects, and the soft crunch of dry earth underfoot. Mornings fall into an easy rhythm. After coffee and a still-warm croissant in a village square, you set out along quiet country roads lined with plane trees and stone farmhouses. One day it’s the rust-red cliffs and sandy paths of the Colorado Provençal, where the ochre stains your shoes and the pines smell of resin in the heat. Another, you’re slipping a kayak into the turquoise ribbon of the Verdon Gorge, limestone walls rising high on either side as swallows skim the water ahead of your paddle. Afternoons belong to the hilltop villages of the Luberon. You wander narrow lanes in places like Gordes and Roussillon, shutters faded by decades of sun, geraniums spilling from window boxes, church bells marking the slow passing of the hours. In former quarries at Carrières de Lumières, you step into a cool, echoing world where monumental projections of paintings and music wash over the rock faces, turning the stone into moving color. Back outside, café terraces fill with the clink of glasses and the murmur of French, Provençal, and the occasional soft English conversation. As the light turns honey-gold, the landscape quiets. You drift through vineyards toward a family farmhouse, where dinner might be a simple daube of beef with olives or grilled vegetables slicked with local olive oil, each course poured alongside a different shade of rosé. On the last evening, a breeze lifts across the fields and the sky fades from apricot to deep blue. Somewhere a dog barks, someone laughs behind a half-open shutter, and you sit for a moment longer, letting the day settle over the hills, unhurried, as if Provence has all the time in the world.

Photography

Today is all about the rust-red heart of the Luberon. Drive across the valley to the Colorado Provençal near Rustrel, where former ochre quarries have become a maze of sandy paths, cliffs, and pine woods. After a picnic with your feet dusted orange, continue to Roussillon, its houses and cliffs painted every shade of ochre. Walk the Sentier des Ocres for an up-close look at the rock formations, then wander the village lanes and viewpoints. As the light softens, return toward Gordes for a relaxed dinner and a glass of wine by the pool.
