Pelion Villages and Coves

About This Trip

The first sound is the scrape of a chair on old stone. Morning in Portaria comes with the clink of tiny cups, the smell of strong Greek coffee, and the low murmur of villagers greeting each other over the square. Sunlight edges over slate roofs, catches on geranium pots, and slides down toward the Pagasetic Gulf far below. You sit beneath a plane tree whose roots have pushed the paving stones into soft waves, warming your hands around a cup as the day’s drive begins to take shape. Soon the road gathers itself into curves, climbing through chestnut and beech forest. Windows down, you smell damp earth and wild herbs crushed by tires along the verge. Above Makrinitsa, balconies seem to hang in mid-air, stone mansions stacked along the hillside, their wooden eaves and arched loggias facing the sea of rooftops and water beyond. You wander narrow lanes ribboned with cobbles, read fading signs of old merchants, and pause at a balcony café where the entire gulf seems to spread beneath your glass. Crossing Hania Pass, Pelion changes mood. The air cools; trunks rise in close ranks; patches of fog linger in hollows even as the sky over the Aegean brightens. The ridge road threads between forest and cliff, then suddenly breaks open to blue. Down on the east coast, you trade shoes for sandals, stone squares for sand. At Mylopotamos Beach, white rock arches frame water so clear you can see fish shadowing the seabed. Waves press in through channels in the rock; you swim beneath the span, the stone cool against your fingertips, the sun high and sharp above. Days fall into an easy pattern: slow departures, shaded lunches, unhurried afternoons. In Tsagarada, a colossal plane tree anchors the square, its trunk hollowed and ridged with age. Tavern tables spill around it, set with lemon-slick grilled fish, hortá greens, and carafes of local wine. Down the coast near Damouchari, you follow a path or hire a small boat along the cliffs to Fakistra, a hidden cove where the sand is coarse, the cliffs steep, and conversation drops to a hush. By the last evening, the road noise has faded in your memory. You sit again in a village square, the sky deepening to indigo, cutlery chiming softly around you. Somewhere beyond the dark line of forest, the Aegean moves against stone, unseen but close, as if the whole peninsula were breathing in and out at a slower, steadier pace.
