About This Trip
The first sound is the clink of coffee cups and fishing lines hitting the water. Early in Parga, before the sun reaches the castle walls, the harbor is quiet: white boats rocking gently, pastel houses stacked up the hill, the Venetian fortress watching from above. You walk along the quay as bakery doors swing open, warm air carrying the smell of cheese pies and strong Greek coffee. Steps rise between painted houses and bougainvillea, pulling you gradually toward the castle and the first wide view of the Ionian Sea.
Days settle into an easy rhythm. Mornings might start on the sand, watching the town reflect in the still water, then slipping onto a small boat that noses along the coast. Pine-topped headlands, rock arches, and coves you only reach by sea; the captain cuts the engine and everything falls quiet except for the soft slap of waves. There’s time for long, unhurried swims in clear water and sand-warmed naps between dips.
When the sun climbs higher, the road inland calls. A short drive leaves the coast behind for olive groves, stone villages, and the surprising green of Epirus. At Acheron Springs, the air cools and the river runs glassy and pale. You wade in, the water shocking your ankles, then your knees, until you’re laughing from the cold. Rafts drift past limestone walls; dragonflies skim the surface. Lunch might be grilled trout at a riverside taverna, plates of local meze spread across the table: baked feta, wild greens, thick yogurt with garlic and cucumber, carafes of crisp white wine.
In the afternoon, the car winds higher to viewpoints over gorges and the distant shimmer of the sea. On another day, a narrow road delivers you to the cliff-top Necromanteion of Acheron. Stones and foundations remain, but it’s the setting that lingers: the river below, fields stretching out, the sense of standing where stories of the underworld once took shape.
Evenings belong to Parga again. The castle path glows in the last light as you climb for sunset, roofs and islands slowly darkening to silhouettes. Later, at a table by the harbor, grilled fish arrives still smelling of charcoal, waves tap softly against the quay, and conversations hum around you. The plates empty, the glasses clear, and the town’s lights reflect in the black water as if urging you to linger just a little longer.
