Palawan Lagoon Escape

About This Trip

The first sound is the soft slap of water on the outrigger hull. Above you, limestone cliffs rise straight out of the sea, streaked with green where palms and vines cling to bare rock. The captain cuts the engine and, in the sudden quiet, only the creak of wood and the rustle of waves against karst walls remain. The lagoon ahead glows an impossible shade of turquoise. You step down the wooden ladder, the water warm against your skin, and glide toward a pocket of Palawan that feels almost entirely your own. Days here find their own rhythm. In El Nido, mornings start early, with coffee on a small terrace as the sky turns from charcoal to rose behind the jagged silhouettes of Bacuit Bay. Fishing boats buzz to life along the beach; your outrigger waits just offshore. By mid-morning you’re slipping between limestone towers, stopping to swim in hidden coves and side lagoons, the boat’s bamboo outriggers brushing against overhanging rock. Lunch might be grilled fish, calamansi-dressed salad, and rice cooked on the boat’s tiny grill, eaten under the shade of a thatched shelter on a sandbar. Afternoons slow down. Back on shore, barefoot, you wander through town for halo-halo or a cold San Miguel, ducking into small eateries where the day’s catch sits on ice in plastic tubs. You learn to order kinilaw the way locals like it—sharp with vinegar, bright with chili—and linger long after your plate is clean, watching the bay shift through shades of blue. Midway through, the route bends north toward Coron. Here, the scenery hardens and deepens: cliffs steeper, water clearer, everything edged with sharp definition. You reach Kayangan Lake before the first tour boats arrive, climbing to the lookout while the air is still cool. Down at the lake, the surface lies glassy and still; underwater, strange rock formations drop away beneath you. Another day, you drift over the coral gardens of Siete Pecados, watching parrotfish flash by in electric color, then picnic on nearly empty sandbars off Malcapuya Island, where the sand squeaks underfoot and the only shade comes from your umbrella and the occasional leaning coconut tree. As evening falls at Maquinit Hot Spring, you sink into saltwater pools warmed from deep below, mangroves silhouetted against a sky fading to deep orange over the bay. The water laps gently at the rocks, conversations drop to a murmur, and for a long, unhurried moment, the world feels very far away.

Romantic

Dawn comes early with coffee in town before you meet your banca at the beach. As the engine hums out of El Nido, cliffs rise higher and the water turns glassy. By mid-morning you’re gliding into Big and Small Lagoon, turquoise shallows giving way to deep jade pools between sheer limestone walls. A grill smokes on the boat while you snorkel over coral, then you eat barefoot on a small island. The day ends with a slow cruise back past Seven Commandos Beach and stone towers lit by sunset.

Scenic Drive

Today slows right down. After a simple breakfast in town, a tricycle or van carries you north through coconut groves toward Nacpan’s long sweep of sand. The beach opens up wide and quiet, with only a few low-key bars and the odd banca offshore. You spend hours wading in warm shallows, reading under palms, and wandering the curve between Nacpan and its twin. A grilled lunch comes with your feet in the sand. Back in El Nido by late afternoon, you clean up and head out for another easy dinner in town.
