Norway Fjord Line Escape

About This Trip

Steel glides against steel as the morning train eases out of Oslo S, city blocks giving way to allotment gardens, pine forest, and a faint smell of coffee still on your hands. Through wide carriage windows, Oslofjord flashes silver between buildings; a cyclist leans into the cold air on a bridge; then the suburbs thin and the rails begin to climb. Inside, it’s quiet—soft conversation, the rustle of a newspaper, the low hum of the Bergen Railway beginning its crossing of Norway’s high plateau. By late morning the landscape has opened completely. Lakes edged with snow even in spring, stunted birch trees bent by wind, red cabins alone against a wide, pale sky. You have time here: time to watch the gradual shift from forest to high mountain, to linger over a waffle with brunost in the café car, to simply sit and let the country unfold at its own pace. At Myrdal you step onto the platform and into cooler air. The Flåm Railway waits on a steeper track, olive-green carriages and large windows promising an entirely different descent. As it drops toward the fjord, waterfalls roar past just beyond the glass, spray drifting on the wind. Old farms cling to slopes that look almost vertical, a reminder of how long people have worked this valley. Down in Flåm, the pace slows further. An electric boat pulls away from the pier with barely a sound, gliding into the tight, sheer walls of Nærøyfjord. The engine is almost silent, so you hear the small things: the trickle of meltwater, a gull’s call echoing between cliffs, the low murmur of other passengers pointing out a hanging farm high above. Following Sognefjord by express boat toward Bergen, the scenery stretches out—wider water, bigger sky, villages gathered around white churches. The city arrives as a curve of painted houses and working cranes, both harbor and hometown. Evenings belong to the waterfront: maybe grilled fish by the old Bryggen wharf, wooden warehouses leaning ever so slightly, cobbles slick from a passing shower. On your final night, you ride the Fløibanen funicular up above Bergen. The city lights scatter across the water and out toward the darkening hills. A breeze lifts from the sea, cool on your face. For a moment, nothing moves but a boat’s wake tracing a thin white line across the harbor.

Land in Norway and ride smoothly into central Oslo, watching forests and suburbs slip by the train window. After settling in, your first taste of the trip comes down by the water: the white slopes of the Oslo Opera House, people sitting on the marble roof with coffee cups and cameras, ferries coming and going across the harbor. As the light softens, you stroll past Oslo City Hall toward Aker Brygge, where restaurant terraces glow and heaters click on, and finish the day with a relaxed dinner by the fjord.

Food Wine

Today you explore Oslo at a gentle, cultural pace. Morning belongs to Vigeland Park, where hundreds of sculptures sit under big skies and locals drift past with dogs and prams. After a tram ride and short ferry hop, Bygdøy’s peninsula feels leafy and calm, perfect for diving into Thor Heyerdahl’s world at the Kon-Tiki Museum. Later, you return to the city’s creative side at Mathallen, an indoor food hall buzzing with small producers, where you can share Norwegian cheeses, cured meats, and a glass of something local.

Today you leave city life behind and follow the rails across Norway’s high plateau toward the fjords. From Oslo Central Station the Bergen Railway climbs steadily, forests giving way to lakes, scattered cabins, and snow-flecked hillsides as you cross Hardangervidda. At Myrdal, you change to the famed Flåm Railway, descending through tight valleys and past roaring waterfalls to the head of Aurlandsfjord. In tiny Flåm, you stretch your legs along the waterfront, browse the Railway Museum, and finish with craft beer and hearty fare in a Viking-style hall.
