Milan Lakes to Peaks

The tram door hisses open onto a Milan sidewalk still damp from an early spray of street cleaners. Espresso cups clink inside the corner bar, scooters murmur past, and the glass needles of Porta Nuova catch the first real light of the day. You wheel your suitcase a few blocks, already knowing you won’t stay long in this city—just long enough to adjust, to taste a perfect sfogliatella, to watch the Duomo’s marble turn warmer as the afternoon fills in. Soon the skyline drops away in the rearview mirror. Motorway concrete softens into vines and terraced hillsides, and then the first glint of water appears: Lake Como, steel-blue and still. At Bellagio, narrow lanes climb between shuttered houses; laundry flutters above tiny wine shops. As the sun slides behind the mountains, you claim a table for aperitivo, Negroni or spritz in hand, watching the rooftops step down to the lake. Bells ring, ferries glide across to Varenna and Menaggio, and the whole shoreline seems to shift into a slower gear. Days settle into a gentle pattern. A morning ferry to wander another promenade. A gelato stop that becomes a small ritual. Children leaning over the rail, counting ducks and passing boats, while the older ones eye paddleboards and lake swims. Further east, the road curls around Lake Garda. In Malcesine, a cable car rises steeply to Monte Baldo, rotating as it climbs. At the top, cool air hits your face and the lake spreads beneath you, a long silver blade between mountains and vineyards. Paths lead off through wildflowers and grazing cows; even the quiet here feels expansive. Climbing into the Dolomites, the landscape sharpens. Gardena and Sella passes twist through rock towers and high meadows, each hairpin revealing another ridge. On Alpe di Siusi, trails cross rolling pastures where wooden huts lean into the slope and cowbells carry on the wind. The walking is easy, the scenery anything but. The journey finishes at sea level, where stone gives way to water streets. In Venice, you leave the main arteries behind, drifting through Cannaregio or Dorsoduro at twilight. A plate of cicchetti on a worn bar counter, a soft splash of an oar in a side canal, laundry lines silhouetted against the fading sky—an unhurried end to two weeks of lakes, peaks, and the quiet pleasure of the road between them.
