Koh Chang & Kood Castaway Fortnight

About This Trip

The first sound is the soft slap of water against the pier as the boat pulls away from the mainland. Plastic crates of vegetables thud onto the deck, a coil of rope slides under a bare foot, and ahead the outline of Koh Chang rises from the Gulf – green, steep, and oddly calming. Salt hangs in the air. Your phone signal fades in and out. Nobody seems to mind. Days here settle quickly into an easy rhythm. On Koh Chang, mornings begin with pale sun on the sand and the distant whine of longtail boats heading out. You wade in before breakfast, the water already warm, then dry off over strong iced coffee and a plate of tropical fruit. When the heat builds, you slip into the jungle interior, following the earthy scent of damp leaves along the trail to Klong Plu waterfall. Cicadas scream, flip-flops are swapped for wet rocks, and the first hit of cool, fresh water as you slide into the pool feels like a reset. Offshore, Koh Rang’s reefs wait in bands of deep blue and turquoise. A small-group boat takes you out past the island’s green slopes, stopping where parrotfish flick through coral and shafts of light fall clean through clear water. Mask on, you drift over branching coral and schools of bright reef fish, surfacing only when the smell of frying garlic and chili from the boat’s tiny galley is too strong to ignore. Later in the trip, Koh Kood feels more remote still. Sand squeaks underfoot on Khlong Chao and Ao Phrao beaches, where sunsets come without a soundtrack beyond the hush of waves and the fizz of a beer bottle opening. One afternoon you trade the open sea for the shelter of mangroves, paddling a kayak along glassy channels at golden hour while egrets pick their way across muddy banks. Another day leads inland again, following the river to Khlong Chao waterfall for another cool plunge under thick canopy. Nights are unhurried: grilled prawns and steamed fish with lime in stilted fishing villages, planks creaking softly over the tide. On one of them, you step from the boat into the dark sea and watch, astonished, as bioluminescent plankton ignite around your hands and legs. Later, drying off on the quiet shore, the islands lie in silhouette and the only thing left to do is listen to the water and the person beside you.
