About This Trip

The first thing you notice is the sound: cutlery on plates, low conversation, the hush of waves against the quay. Ahead, the Thermaic Gulf glows orange as the sun drops, and the lights along Thessaloniki’s seafront slowly switch on. You sit at a table on the promenade, sharing small plates—grilled octopus, fried gavros, warm pita dipped in smoky melitzanosalata—while ferries slide past the White Tower and the city eases into evening. Mornings here start with the smell of coffee. A strong Greek brew or a cold frappé in hand, you walk Nikis Avenue as joggers pass and fishing lines arc over the railing. There’s time to wander into the backstreets, where markets spill out with figs, tomatoes, and olives, and into the old lanes of Ano Poli, where Byzantine walls watch over the modern city below. This urban energy is a soft launch; the road, and quieter shores, are waiting. Once you clear the city, the drive south into Halkidiki settles into its own rhythm. Asphalt unwinds between silver-green olive groves and glimpses of turquoise water. Windows down, you follow the curve of the Sithonia peninsula, pulling off where the scent of pine thickens and a side road drops toward the sea. Kalogria. Spathies. Names that quickly become places you feel: soft sand underfoot, low cliffs, clear water over pale rock. You swim, you snorkel, you linger in the shade of pines until the sun lifts a little. One day is set aside for the water itself. A small boat heads out around Diaporos Island, the hull cutting a clean line through glassy shallows. The so-called Blue Lagoon really is an abrupt shock of color—water so clear that anchor chains seem to float. You drift, swim, climb back aboard salty and sun-warmed, then do it again in the next cove. Evenings gather around harbors. In Neos Marmaras, then later in Porto Koufo, tables sit almost level with the water. Platters of just-caught fish, lightly grilled and dressed with lemon and oil. Carafes of local white wine. Conversation slows as the sky darkens and fishing boats return, one by one. On your last night, the road is behind you. You walk a short path to a small beach, the cicadas finally quieting. The sea is a dark sheet, the only light coming from a distant taverna sign and a slice of moon. You stand there a moment, sand cooling under your feet, listening to the faint tinkle of glasses and the soft pull of the Aegean.

Coastal Road Trip

You land in Thessaloniki and ease into Greece rather than rushing. A short ride brings you to the seafront, where the Thermaic Gulf and the line of palm trees set the tone. After dropping bags, you wander through Modiano Market’s stalls of olives, cheeses, and fragrant herbs before climbing into Ano Poli’s old lanes for a first city view. As the sky turns orange, you return to Nikis Avenue, taking a table right by the water for mezze, wine, and the slow glow of city lights.

Morning starts slowly on the seafront with a strong coffee and the last look at Thessaloniki’s joggers and fishing lines. By late morning you’re on the highway south, trading apartment blocks for olive groves and glimpses of blue water. Arriving in Nikiti, you drop your bags and head straight for the promenade, where beach bars, bobbing boats, and shallow water invite a first swim. Lunch is simple grilled fish by the sand, and the day winds down with a stroll into the old village and taverna plates under the plane trees.

Today the road becomes part of the pleasure. You leave Nikiti after breakfast and follow the coast to Kalogria Beach, where pale sand and pines meet shallow turquoise water. A short hop takes you to Neos Marmaras for a harborfront seafood lunch, fishing boats nodding at the quay. In the afternoon you slip into the quieter cove of Spathies for snorkeling and shade. As the light drops, you continue down the peninsula, ending in the deep natural harbor of Porto Koufo for a long, lemon-and-olive-oil seafood dinner before the drive back.
