Greek Island Star Terraces

About This Trip

The first sound is the soft clink of cups from a nearby café as you step onto a rooftop terrace in Chora. Below, the white cube houses stack down the hillside; above, the Aegean sky is turning from ink to deep velvet. The last smudge of sunset fades behind the dark outline of Amorgos, and then the stars arrive—sharp, bright, unhurried. The Milky Way stretches over church domes and stone lanes, and the island feels very far from anywhere else. Mornings begin simply. Bare feet on cool tiles, the smell of Greek coffee, the hush of the sea carried uphill on a light breeze. You wander out before the day heats up, following narrow alleys past blue-painted doors and pots of basil. A short drive brings you to Levrossos, where the sand curves in a quiet arc and the water at sunrise is glass-clear and almost warm. You swim while the beach is still empty, each stroke catching the first light on the surface. As the sun climbs, you follow ancient mule paths that link the whitewashed villages above Aegiali. The trail winds between terraces and dry-stone walls, past tiny chapels and the occasional goat watching from the shade. Up here, time falls away. The hills open to views of the bay below, and the only sounds are crickets and your own steps on the path. One day stretches out over the water. A small boat points toward Nikouria, its low hills rising from an expanse of turquoise. You drop anchor in a cove where the sea turns a startling, clear blue over pale sand. Mask on, you slide into the water to snorkel above rocks fringed with seagrass, sunlight rippling across the seabed. Another afternoon leads you to the sheer cliffs east of Chora, where Panagia Hozoviotissa Monastery clings impossibly to the rock face. You climb the white steps, step inside its cool interior, then stand at the edge of the cliff, looking down at the open sea. It feels both vast and very close. Nights end the way they began: back on a terrace, the island quiet, the constellations bright and steady. The sea is only a dark suggestion on the horizon, and in the stillness you notice how deeply your shoulders have dropped, how easy it is, here, to simply look up and breathe.
