About This Trip

The engine quiets and the lake takes over. Water slaps softly against the hull as your boat slips away from Bellagio’s stone jetty, lights from waterfront villas flickering across Lake Como. Waves fan out behind you, Varenna’s pastel houses sharpening against the darkening slopes. The air smells of wood polish, cool water, and someone grilling lake fish onshore. As the captain cuts the motor, the silence between the two villages feels almost physical. Mornings here are slow by design. Espresso at a tiny bar, locals standing at the counter; a stroll along Como’s promenade while the first ferries move across the water. The road waits, but there’s no rush. You trace the lake’s edge, tunnels punching briefly through cliff, before the landscape opens toward vineyards and olive groves on the way to Lake Garda. At Garda, the water feels wider, brighter. In Sirmione, you wade out beneath the crenellated walls of Scaligero Castle, the stone still warm from the afternoon sun as you swim in the clear shallows. Later, a gelato in hand, you watch boats nose into the harbor and couples lean on the parapet, waiting for the sky to turn copper. The road lifts you higher the next day, up from shorelines to ridgelines. A cable car glides you to Monte Baldo, turning lazily as Lake Garda shrinks below. Up top, the air is thinner, cleaner; paragliders step into nothing and drift out over the water while you follow a gentle path along the grassed ridge. Farther north, the architecture shifts. Shutters sharpen, roofs steepen, menus flip between Italian and German. Around Bolzano, vines stripe the hills, and you follow the South Tyrol Wine Road from village to village, sampling crisp, mineral whites in cool cellars beneath painted farmhouses. Then the mountains close in. Switchbacks climb toward Sella Pass, where every bend reveals a new wall of pale stone. On the Alpe di Siusi plateau, the drama softens: wide meadows, wooden huts, bells from unseen cows. A simple path winds through flowers brushing at your calves, peaks watching at a distance. One evening, you pull off at a small lay-by, engine ticking as it cools. The last light leaves the rock faces and the sky settles into deep blue. For a moment, no one speaks. The road, the lakes, the passes all feel very close, and very quiet.

You land at Malpensa and head into central Milan as the city is waking up. The Duomo’s marble spires rise above the square while locals weave through tourists on their way to work. After a relaxed lunch overlooking the cathedral, you wander the Galleria’s mosaicked arcades and pause for espresso. Late afternoon folds into aperitivo time, when cocktails and small plates appear at the bar. Dinner in a traditional trattoria introduces saffron risotto and rich ossobuco before you stroll back through the softly lit piazza.

Road Trip

Milan wakes slowly while you grab a cappuccino and watch commuters weave through the Duomo square. Late morning, you collect your rental car and leave the city, trading tram wires for mountains as the road climbs toward the western arm of Lake Como. You skirt Como’s waterfront and continue along the narrow SP583, tunnels cutting through cliffs and sudden lake views opening on each bend. By early afternoon Bellagio appears ahead; you settle into town, wander its steep stone lanes, and end with dinner overlooking the meeting of the three branches.

Boat Trip

Morning comes slowly on the lake, with espresso at a bar counter and locals chatting over the sports page. You explore Bellagio’s waterfront and quiet gardens, watching ferries fan out toward distant villages. After a light lunch with wide views, the day stretches at an easy pace—perhaps a swim, perhaps simply reading under the trees. As late afternoon softens, you board a small private boat and slip away from Bellagio, the water turning glassy between here and Varenna, before returning for dinner by the shore.
