Glacier & Bernina Alpine Loop

About This Trip

The train slides out of Chur before you’ve quite finished your first coffee, steel on steel humming beneath the panoramic windows. Forested slopes rise sharply from the valley floor; a church spire flashes past; then the line begins to climb. On the Albula section of the Glacier Express, the world narrows to stone tunnels and sudden viaducts, the Rhine now far below, river-white against dark rock. You sit eye-level with peaks that would normally belong to mountaineers, watching tiny farmhouses cling to impossible green ledges. By the time you step onto the platform in Pontresina, the air feels different—thinner, clearer, carrying the faint resin of larch and the ring of cowbells from a distant slope. This village becomes home for several nights. Stone houses stand shoulder to shoulder along the main street, their facades etched with sgraffito patterns and dates that quietly announce centuries of winters endured. Mornings move slowly here: unhurried breakfasts, sun edging over the Bernina range, a short walk to the station instead of a rush. One day you follow the valley towards the Morteratsch Glacier, first through pine forest, then out onto a wide, stony plain. Wooden markers along the path show where the ice once reached; each year, the distance grows. The crunch of gravel under your boots, the cold breath that rolls off the glacier face, the muted crack of shifting ice in the distance—all of it turns climate charts into something you can feel on your skin. Another day, the Bernina Express lifts you higher. The red train threads past frozen lakes and summer meadows, over the Bernina Pass where glaciers spill between peaks, then curls gracefully around the Brusio spiral viaduct as if showing off its engineering. Italian voices join Swiss German in the carriage; the menu switches from rösti to polenta without ceremony. The mountains loosen their grip as the tracks skim the shores of Lake Como: terraced gardens, terracotta roofs, olive trees leaning towards the water. By the time you reach Lugano, the light has changed again—softer, warmer, reflected in palms along the lakeside promenade. Evenings here are for slow walks past café terraces and moored boats, for a glass of local merlot or a gelato shared on a bench. When the last train journey is behind you, you may find yourself sitting quietly at the edge of the lake, watching the lights of hillside villas blink on one by one. The rails that linked high glacier valleys to this gentle, almost Mediterranean shore feel less like a route on a map than a continuous, unfolding story you were lucky enough to ride through, one calm day at a time.

Culture History

You arrive in Chur with time to settle into Switzerland’s oldest city rather than rush through it. Cobbled lanes of the Altstadt twist between painted facades, church towers, and tucked-away fountains. After a hearty Grisons-style lunch, the afternoon is for an unhurried wander through the compact historic center, spotting Glacier Express posters and crimson RhB trains in the distance. As evening falls, you linger over a traditional dinner in a wood-paneled restaurant, then step back into the quiet streets, already picturing tomorrow’s panoramic ride into the high Alps.

Nature

Today is for turning the idea of glaciers into something tangible. After a short hop on the Bernina line to Morteratsch, you follow the valley path past signposts marking where the glacier once reached. Forest thins to a wide, stony plain, and the air cools as you approach the ice wall. Over lunch on the terrace of Hotel Morteratsch you watch hikers trace tiny lines towards the tongue of the glacier. Afternoon brings time to sit with the view before ambling back and returning to Pontresina for a fondue-scented evening.
