Arrival and Varenna Lakeside Stroll
Arrive in Milan and ride the train north as city blocks give way to mountains and glimpses of water. At tiny Varenna-Esino station you walk downhill through narrow lanes to the lakefront, the air suddenly cooler and scented with stone and espresso. After a relaxed lakeside lunch, you wander into Villa Monastero’s terraced gardens for a first sweep of Lake Como views. In the evening, dinner on a balcony above the water lets you watch ferries glide past as the opposite shore lights up.
Lake Triangle and Sunset Ferries
Morning starts with a cappuccino on Varenna’s tiny promenade as early ferries crisscross the flat water. A short crossing takes you to Bellagio, where stone lanes and stepped alleys lead up to quiet chapels and lookouts. After lunch on a vine-draped terrace, another boat glides you across to Menaggio for gelato and a lakeside playground pause. As evening light turns pink, you ride the open-deck ferry back toward Varenna, watching Bellagio and Menaggio’s façades glow while you drift into a relaxed lakeside dinner.
Villa del Balbianello Cruise Day
Today centers on the most theatrical villa on the lake, approached properly from the water. After a slow Varenna morning, you join a mid-lake cruise skimming past waterfalls and grand villas toward the wooded promontory of Balbianello. Terraced gardens, clipped hedges, and film-set vistas give plenty to explore without long walks. Back in Varenna mid-afternoon, there’s time for gelato and a lakeside pause while ferries come and go. Dinner is unhurried, with views that echo the villa’s terraces across the water.
