Bath Weekend from London

About This Trip

Steam rises off the carriage roof as the Great Western Railway train sighs into Bath Spa, brakes hissing against the platform. You step down into cool air and the smell of coffee from the station café, following the flow of weekend bags through the short tunnel and out into pale stone streets that seem to glow even under grey skies. Within minutes you’re crossing the River Avon, the arches of Pulteney Bridge lined with shopfronts, the water sliding steadily below. The city reveals itself slowly on foot. Cobbled lanes peel away from the main streets, leading toward Abbey Churchyard where the great fan vaulting of Bath Abbey lifts your gaze upward. Just beside it, the Roman Baths sit low and discreet, steam curling above the green surface of the Great Bath as audio guides murmur in a dozen languages. You wander through torch-lit walkways, past weathered altars and worn stone steps, the echo of sandals on ancient paving suddenly easy to imagine. Afternoons move at a different pace here. You slip into an elegant Georgian pump room, chandeliers catching the light while a pianist traces familiar notes across fine china and tiered cake stands. Finger sandwiches, warm scones, thick clotted cream; servers pour tea, and if you’re curious, a small glass of the city’s mineral water, still served as it was to 18th-century visitors. Later, you climb gently uphill, following the curve of Brock Street until it spills you into the perfect oval of the Circus and then, a few more steps, to the sweep of the Royal Crescent. As the sun drops, the limestone deepens to amber and windows blink on, one by one. Evenings belong to low beams, polished wood, and the soft hum of conversation in snug pubs. You find a corner table, order a local ale and a plate of something hearty—pie, perhaps, or a slow-cooked stew—and watch as students, locals, and weekenders settle in around you. On your final morning, warm water laps at your shoulders on the rooftop of Thermae Bath Spa. The skyline is all creamy stone, spires, and terraces, a faint mist rising into the chilly air. You float toward the edge, listening to the quiet ripple of the pool and the muted bells from the Abbey beyond, and let the city hold still for a moment before the train carries you back to London.
