Bali Temples & Beaches

About This Trip

Bali in two acts: the green, temple-quiet interior first, then down to the coast where the days loosen and the surf comes in. It's a trip that splits its time cleanly — Ubud for the culture and the rice country, the southern beaches for the light and the water — which means you unpack twice and never feel you've rushed either half. Balanced by design: an early start here, a slow afternoon there. It suits almost anyone, though it rewards those who don't mind a pre-dawn alarm for one good sunrise. That sunrise is Mount Batur, climbed in the dark so you're at the rim as the valley fills with light. The rest of the inland days run gentler — the Tegallalang terraces stepping down the hillside in the morning cool, the Monkey Forest with its mossy shrines and bolder residents, and the kind of lunch you take in a warung where the menu is short and the babi guling is the reason to be there. On the coast, the register changes. Seminyak is the wide, easy beach — long sands, longer sunsets, somewhere to do nothing well. Uluwatu is the counterweight: a temple on the cliff edge, and at dusk the Kecak dance, a hundred voices and a ring of fire against the last of the light. Come in the dry season, roughly April through October, when the treks hold their footing and the beach days come reliably. It's a first look at Bali that trusts you to want both sides of it — the sacred and the salt.

Arrive in Bali and head straight to the lush hills of Ubud, watching the traffic thin and the greenery deepen as you leave the airport behind. After checking in, wander toward the town center for a first taste of Balinese flavors over a plate of babi guling. Spend the afternoon exploring the ornate gates and courtyards of Ubud Palace, then drift through the nearby art market as the light softens. End the evening with a relaxed warung dinner and an early night to reset after travel.

Wake up to roosters and incense in Ubud, then wander down toward the jungly ravine that shelters the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary. Paths wind under huge banyan trees, past mossy carvings and shrines watched over by curious macaques. After a long, shaded walk, refuel with colorful smoothie bowls and Indonesian dishes at a laid-back café. In the afternoon, escape to a spa tucked among rice fields for a slow, aromatic massage. As evening falls, return to central Ubud for a relaxed warung dinner and a quiet stroll home.

Sunrise

Well before dawn, leave Ubud in the dark and drive up into Kintamani’s cool highlands toward Mount Batur. A zigzagging torchlit path leads steadily upward until the horizon glows and the island slowly appears below you. After watching sunrise spill over the crater lake and clouds, descend to a lakeside hot spring resort to soak tired legs in volcanic-heated pools. A late breakfast or early lunch by the water restores energy. Return to Ubud for a slow afternoon, ending with a relaxed dinner near the center.
